If your boiler is temperamental, noisy or more than 15 years old, it may be more economical to replace it than to pay for repairs. You could save as much as 37 per cent on your heating bills.
Boilers come in two types; conventional boilers heat up a store of water while combination boilers heat the water as required. Condensing versions of either are expensive but highly efficient, extracting heat from the vapour produced in the combustion process. The ultimate is the 'WhisperGen' Micro Combined Heat and Power unit which makes use of the large amounts of heat normally lost.
From 1 April this year, new regulations mean that if circumstances allow, all newly-fitted gas-fired boilers must be condensing.
What it should cost: pounds 2,400.
Extras: micro CHP 'WhisperGen' unit, supplied and fitted, pounds 3,000. What you should get for your money: fully fitted replacement boiler with 5 year parts and labour guarantee.
