Residents living in sheltered and other elderly care accommodation, owned by Rugby Borough Council, have had their warm air central heating systems replaced with modern, high efficiency units manufactured by Johnson and Starley. They are delivering improved comfort and lower fuel bills. The phases of work undertaken so far across the Midlands town have addressed some 180 properties, being carried out under the guidance of the council's Property Maintenance Department.
The Johnson and Starley Economaire 31 warm air heaters, replacing outdated Thorn units, are generally being fitted within compartments in the hallway of the flats.
Thanks to the design of the Economaire as well as the training and support offered by the manufacturer, contractors are frequently completing work within two dwellings in one day.
The Principal Property Maintenance Officer, Mr Mike Frost, comments: "Due to the way the flats are constructed with concrete floors, staying with a warm air central heating system offered far fewer complications than installing a wet central heating system using radiators.
The Johnson and Starley Economaire units met all of our needs, enabling us to move to a sealed environment for the flues which was our biggest concern."
A spokesman for Johnson and Starley's Technical Sales department added: "We find a lot of older people prefer to keep their warm air heaters, not simply because they are familiar with them.
They are easy to control, deliver warmth and comfort immediately they want it, and are very economical to run."
The original heaters had been fitted with asbestos flues which have also had to be replaced.
In all cases the new flue from the downstairs dwelling has been routed up through the compartment of the flat above with both units being terminated at roof level.
The Economaire's fanned flue in fact offers the installer a good deal of flexibility and is available in either vertical or horizontal options.
Then the combination of a fully modulating electronic control ensures the temperature set is maintained to within +/- 0.1o C.
The Economaire incorporates a number of design features that enhance its performance.
These include automatic ignition for efficient use of fuel.
An infinitely variable supply air fan and modulating controls enable output to match heating demand.
A self diagnostics fault finding panel is also standard.
Other options include a water heater and cleanflow electric filtration which will provide the home with clean, filtered air with 95% of airborne pollutants down to one micron removed.
The installations for Rugby Borough Council have been carried out by Plumbline Contracting Limited and Birmingham based Status Heating.
Johnson and Starley were established in 1922 and for over 80 years have provided innovation to the UK heating industry.
