A task force examining waste-related issues in Maine has recommended repealing a state law that limits the use of wood from construction and demolition debris in biomass boilers, according to a report in the Bangor Daily News (Bangor, Maine). The state approved legislation in 2006 that limits waste-to-energy plants to using no more than 50 percent C&D debris for fuel per year. The cap has come into question because it would hinder the plans for a new C&D debris boiler proposed for Athens, Maine, by a company called GenPower, according to the report.
Members of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Solid Waste Management have voted 4-2 to recommend lifting the ban. The commission is completing its recommendations before submitting them to the state legislature.
