The installation of a Reznor Therma-Cool unit is providing year round comfortable temperatures for Leighton Buzzard based manufacturer Transfixt Limited. The primary requirement for selecting the gas-fired Reznor Therma-Cool combined heating, ventilating and cooling unit was to keep a constant operating temperature in the production area, especially during the hot summer months. Transfixt produces specialist self-adhesive tapes, finger-lift transfer tapes, tamper-evident security tapes/labels, along with contract slitting and hotmelt adhesive coating of varied substrates - processes which can dissipate significant quantities of heat.
During the summer periods the ambient temperature would become excessive, especially as the factory doors had to remain closed for essential security.
As well as being unbearable for staff, product integrity and machine efficiency would suffer in these extremes.
The Reznor solution provides energy efficient heating, ventilation and cooling, maintaining a comfortable 21-23C for operations.
Designed and installed by County Plumbing and Heating, Rushden in Northants, a high capacity Reznor T2095G cooling model was installed in the factory roof (8m at its highest).
The unit has a cooling capacity of 70 KW, a heating output of 93 KW and has extra horizontal and vertical louvre deflectors to direct a powerful warm or cool air stream around the building but away from the actual production machinery.
Temperatures are controlled by a Reznor Energymizor control panel, enabling isolation of the heating, ventilating or cooling options.
Two condensers have been installed outside the building at ground level and caged to prevent vandalism.
Roger Colwell, Administrations Manager for Transfixt comments: 'We originally had a Reznor XA400 unit heating the factory, which we've since moved into an adjacent unit that had no heating'.
'When we were looking for a combined heating and cooling unit as a replacement, Reznor was our first choice of manufacturer'.
''The Reznor installation has certainly proved to be extremely efficient and effective over the summer period, with the system maintaining cool working conditions despite outside temperatures reaching over 30C'.
Energy savings achieve payback on new Reznor warm system in just 9 months A 9-month payback on investment in a new Reznor warm air heating system at Unipart DCM's 93,000m2 Cowley distribution centre exceeded all expectations, falling well within the 2-year limit required by the company'.
'Exceptional energy savings of 35 per cent a year have been achieved since the system was installed in 1994'.
'The Reznor heaters maintain a constant temperature of 16-17C, ensuring a comfortable working atmosphere'.
'Unipart DCM is one of Europe's leading providers of outsourced aftermarket logistics and distribution services'.
'Its Cowley distribution centre was built in 1964, the biggest of four Unipart DCM distribution centres now operating in the UK.
Originally, the building was equipped with a high pressure hot water heating system, run off three large boilers'.
'Heat was supplied to the operational areas via radiant strip heat emitters positioned at 9 metres in the roof'.
'The system took approximately three days to warm up, since it had to heat all 250 tonnes of water before it would work effectively'.
'High running and maintenance costs made the system increasingly non-viable for Unipart'.
'Reznor, working with contractor Thermatic of Salford, designed a warm air heating system consisting of a total of 105 XD400, XAA400 and XB400 heater units in four zones within the main areas'.
'In addition, 220 Maximizor fans were installed for recirculation of risen warm air to lower level'.
'Fourteen air curtains were also fitted to ensure warm air remains within the building when loading bay doors are opened and closed'.
'Ron Mansfield of Unipart oversaw the project'.
'He comments: 'From my calculations I was doubtful whether we would achieve the two year payback period required.
What the system actually achieved was remarkable, having now paid for itself many times over'.
'Our employees noticed the difference immediately'.
'Operation and maintenance of the system are simple and we have a constant working temperature that is comfortable for everyone.'
